Victorian Goura Plumes Feathers

Antique and exceedingly rare, in the true sense of the word. A full crest of feathers from the exotic male Goura bird, and these are the highly coveted mating crest plumage. Goura crests were the highest fashion status symbol which could be worn on a woman’s grand hat during the Victorian and Edwardian period of 1890 to 1913. Frothy and airy spikes of soft feathers with their natural “tips” intact. A neighbor of The Greater Bird Of Paradise, the Goura bird is scarcely seen today. Only the Bird Of Paradise could compete with the Goura for fashion’s highest ranking as a millinery adornment. The bird’s feathers were so desired that their price was literally worth 10 times their weight in gold. They were so sought after that to satisfy the demands of Dame fashion, imitation “crests” were made of cheaper feathers glued to the shape and colors of the Goura. Even those lesser imitations are scarce and pricey today. What you see here, however, is the real thing!
This is the full crest plumage of the male bird, taken during mating and only appearing on the male bird’s forehead during that time. The date on this is circa 1910 and it was expertly dyed a vivid stunning sky blue, obviously to match a grand antique hat of the Edwardian Era as worn by a wealthy woman of social rank.
Measuring 9″ long and when fully opened and spread it is approximately 6″ across.
While the Goura plumes are exceedingly rare, it is even more scarce to find them dyed to a color, as this has been. A prize in any millinery or exotic feather collection.
Condition is excellent, and it has been amazingly well preserved. A Full crest with no missing feathers, and is supple and soft with no shedding, no soiling or odors, no dryness, or breakage.
