Christian Dior 1948 Blue Straw Platter Hat
Scarce, early work from this legendary French Haute Couture designer, Christian Dior. This dates from circa 1948 to 1950, when Christian was still alive and designing. Classic “New Look” Era hat, and a great hat for the serious collector.
The hat is light as a feather, made of gossamer light buntal straw, expertly woven in a panama weave. Beautiful color of pale French blue or sky blue, with navy blue petersham ribbon around the crown, and two flirty bows. Wide, oval shapped platter has a shallow crown, and is completely hand sewn and blocked.
Two labels sewn to inner ribbon band, One says “Made In France” and the other “Christian Dior New York, Original, Made In France, Trademark”. This validates the hat as a very early work, as this label was only used for a few years in the very late 40s and early part of the 1950’s, when Dior began his collaboration with the U.S.A stores. Made in France (as it says), this very rare hat is a prize for your collection, to study, to wear, for a museum, or for your personal fashion research. Designed by Dior, executed by Simone Mirman or perhaps Maude Roser.
CONDITION: GOOD, however with some flaws, but this hat is such a scarce example of Dior’s early millinery work that it is being sold on the basis of that rarity, not solely on condition. The hat is clean with no holes, dirt or odors. The hat does have some fading of the blue color. If you move the dark blue ribbons, you can see the straw’s original blue color which is a bit deeper (see close up pix). The tip of the crown is faded as shown. The hat is not soiled, stained, or dirty, and has no holes, rips or tears. The ribbons are good, with light age only. The brim has some bit of waviness to it, as shown in these photos. This could be steamed out if it bothers you, but I leave that to the new owner. It displays fine as it is. The inside of the hat is clean.
