1940 Hattie Carnegie Yellow Ostrich Plume TILT Hat
A MAGICAL Hat! A true prize, a rare jewel of a vintage chapeau, fresh from a private collection, that has never been offered for sale previously.
Vintage is very early 1940s, 1939-1941, and the hat was custom made by Hattie Carnegie in her New York salon. A genuine TILT hat, made of glossy black, natural glazed straw that is swathed in a stunning cloud of yards and yards French silk millinery veiling with tiny silk chenille puffs in chartreuse (yellow green). Finished with two huge, super thick and fluffy antique ostrich plumes in a yummy shade of daffodil yellow! The plumes are so very thick and full, each is several plumes sewn together to create a thick and rich effect. Some of the most beautiful plumes I have ever seen. The plumes are sheathed in veiling too, on the ends.
The hat has a unique shape, almost heart shaped, with a flat shallow crown and small brim. There is a flange of straw in the back, the iconic 1940s tilt “flap” which attaches to your up-swept hair with clips or hat pins. Label is black and yellow and reads “Hattie Carnegie”.
The hat is meant to be worn at a very sharp forward tilt, almost covering 1 eye. The French silk veiling can be re-arranged to suit your style, and can be worn deep over the face or around the neck and shoulders.
Condition is very good, near excellent. Fresh and clean, looks so very well preserved. Plumes are excellent, pristine, no shedding or breaks or fade. The straw is supple and glossy, no flaws to note. The hat has no odors or soiling, no breaks or wear. The silk veiling is fresh and lovely, not dry or brittle. I found only 1 or 2 tiny breaks in the connecting threads, not really even a hole, and so so tiny and you do not notice them, there is so much going on with this hat, and 99% of the veiling is mint condition. Inside of hat is clean, some mild age to the label. Overall, near excellent.
